The process of gathering information and writing a business plan helps the entrepreneur take an objective, critical look at the business idea and its chances for success. A home-based business may be related to an individual’s previous occupation, but may also be based upon a hobby or the discovery of a unique business opportunity. In any case, the idea should be evaluated with an eye toward market potential and competition. Once the business is up and running, the business plan sets forth goals and standards for management and serves as an operational tool to measure progress. Although there are many ways to start a home-based business—including “moonlighting” while employed full-time, working part-time for an employer and part-time at home, and just taking the plunge—planning is important to all of them.

Another exception to the exclusive-use test applies to a portion of your home used to store product samples or inventory you sell in your business. Assume your home-based business is the retail sale of home-cleaning products and that you regularly use half of your basement to store inventory. Occasionally using that part of the basement to store personal items would not cancel your home office deduction. To qualify for this exception, your home must be the only location of your business.
Flier Distribution Service: All you need is a telephone and good walking shoes. You can employ casual staff to help scale your business. Research what the current flier delivery services are charging.
Once you sign up, Google will place a simple code on your website that will identify the content of your site and start displaying relevant advertisements. For example, if your site is about pets (dogs & cats), Google AdSense will start showing your visitors ads for cat food, dog training and more.
If you have the gift of gab, public speaking is a worthwhile side business idea for you to pursue. Many authors, medical practitioners, scientists, artisans, politicians, and other subject matter experts earn extra income by delivering speeches, seminars, and presentations. Professional motivational speakers earn an average annual salary of around $90,000 with just that portion of their income, making this a very realistic side business idea while you continue practicing your craft.

Employed techies planning to earn some extra side income can leverage their software and hardware skills by offering home-based computer repair services as a business idea that engages their passion. If this rings a bell, you can start with a modest one-man tech team before envisioning a scaled-up operation as massive as Geek Squad. Remember, you can provide home service locally as a starting point to this business idea, as well as offer remote support through online messaging and video calling services before making your way into a retail setting.
These sites pay you a little for sharing links to your social network accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.). I think people with large numbers of social media followers have the most success using sites like this, but even for the average person with few followers, it could be some extra cash here and there.
Some churches don’t have volunteers for their music. A talented pianist, guitar player, etc. can make pretty good money doing this on the weekends. Most churches offer tryouts on occasion. This idea is pretty easy to get started in that you just need to reach out to your worship pastor or someone in that ministry and let them know you have the talent and some experience. Don’t be shy!
You can always offer different services on your site. I can’t guarantee they’ll be converting well into clients, but it’s a one way to do it. Just add a “services” or “hire me” link at the top of your menu.
One idea to make extra money that I left off my list is to use Ebates.com when you shop online. Ebates is a free service that gives you cash back just for shopping like you normally would. Join free now and receive $5 cash.

I now have a general question that I hope you can address. My husband recently started a travel story/advice website in his first language, Spanish. He hopes to attract Google AdSense to it, but he understands that it will take time. I have just registered my own English site with SiteGround to offer the same content in English, but I don’t yet have an actual framework/theme for it. I’m not too concerned about that, as I can see that many themes would be suitable. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the details and mechanics of getting this going, however. I don’t want to stumble now if I can do it right, even if it takes a bit longer. My husband’s brother-in-law started his own site a few years ago in Italy and began to make a very lot of money. He then increased his efforts to several more sites, which made him even more money, but then the profits started to fall. My husband and I suspect that he actually decreased his own traffic with the new sites. We would like to have one quality site in 2 languages, which hopefully make money later; but we aren’t greedy and I feel strongly about creating decent content. (If you look at his current site, you will see that the articles are very long. We now realize they have to be shorter going forward!) If you have any advice for us, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance!
Every startup needs a business plan, and according to Liatsos, a home-based startup is no exception. “Think of it as a road map,” she says. “It tells you where you are, where you want to go, and how you plan to get there.” As you write the plan, you’ll begin to put together the pieces of how to divide your time between your business and home life, where you’ll locate your office, what equipment to buy, and what to expect in terms of having enough money to continue to cover your home expenses, plus the added expenses of running a business.
Turo sends payment within 30 minutes of the end of the rental. Payment is issued via direct deposit and can take 1-3 business days to appear in your account. For rentals longer than one week, Turo issues partial payments every seven days.
Parking spots can be a hot commodity, particularly in crowded areas. If you have a driveway or dedicated spot that you don’t use, rent it out on Craigslist or another service. Just make sure leasing your space is allowed if you’re a renter or belong to a homeowners association.
